Every conversation about racquets uses the same vocabulary. Here is what the parts are and why each one matters.
The head
The oval that holds the strings. Its area — measured in square inches — sets the size of the sweet spot and the trampoline effect of the string bed. Bigger heads are more forgiving and more powerful; smaller heads give more feedback and control.
The string bed
The mains run vertically from the top of the head to the throat and do most of the work of gripping and launching the ball. The crosses run horizontally and hold the mains in place. A 16x19 pattern is open and spin-friendly; 18x20 is dense and control-oriented. The sweet spot is the region where the frame twists and vibrates least, sitting slightly above the geometric centre.
Grommets and bumper guard
Plastic sleeves lining the holes in the frame protect the string from the sharp edges of the graphite. The bumper guard is the strip across the top of the head that absorbs scrapes on court. Both are replaceable and are usually the first parts to wear out.
The throat and shaft
The Y-shaped section below the head. It controls how the frame flexes and where it torsions. A stiffer throat delivers more energy back to the ball; a more flexible one dampens shock. The shaft is the section running from the throat down into the handle.
The beam
The cross-section thickness of the frame, quoted in millimetres and often as three numbers for the tip, middle and throat. Thicker beams (26 mm+) are stiffer and more powerful; thinner beams (20–22 mm) flex more and favour control and comfort.
The handle
The grip is the wrap you hold. The pallet underneath sets the eight-sided shape and the grip size, and the bevels are the eight faces you use as landmarks to find continental, eastern, semi-western and western grips. The butt cap flares at the base to stop the racquet slipping out of your hand and is where the manufacturer prints the grip size.
Weight, balance and swing weight
Static weight is what the scales read. Balance is the distance from the butt to the balance point, described as head-light or head-heavy. Swing weight combines the two and describes how heavy the frame feels while moving — it is the number that best predicts how the racquet plays. Adding lead tape at 3 and 9 o'clock on the hoop raises stability; adding it at 12 o'clock adds power at the cost of manoeuvrability.
